Joboya-A Way Of Life

Since recently discussion different situations in class about AIDS/HIV I have come to learn very much about the topic. Even watching these videos about how it becomes spread more and more through out the country of Africa interests me as well.  Before watching the video about sex trade for fish I thought the disease was spread in different ways.  I simply thought that Africa was dirty and that was a catalyst for the virus in spreading quicker then how it does in America. I also believe that the spread happened due to the lack of protection use and precautions. I notice that these women are not really have sex for the enjoyment and pleasure but more along the lines of putting food on the table for their family. I believe that it puts them in a tough position in decided whether they need to go have relations with the local fishermen to get food or to shy away from that to reduce the risk of spreading AIDS.

As for watching the other video called deadly catch it shows very similar ways of spreading AIDS. It is called the Joboya system that is a relationship that is developed between the fishermen and women who are buying the fish. The women who want to buy the fish not only have to pay the fee to buy it but also must offer sex to the fishers. This is a huge way the HIV/AIDS virus is spread and with the fisherman traveling all over it gives the explanation of how it spreads so quickly. I am very surprised that with all the information that the United States has about prevention of the spreading and also about how bad it affects the body that it is still a intense problem over in Africa and not seen as serious. I know that putting food on the table for your family comes first as a mother but these times must end and try to decrease the spread of the virus.

As for the third video which is about Stephanie Nolen talking about the stories of AIDS in Africa and she starts off talking about how she has been all over the world on very big stories but always went back to Africa to research and follow the issue of AIDS. It makes me realize that she is showing that we see the big news stories that CNN and other news companies cover but we tend to overlook the spread of the AIDS virus. It is such a huge problem over in Africa and it only takes one person to relay the story back her to get the attention of others. I only hope that Ms. Nolen is able to do that in ways to get people’s support and figure out ways the reduction of the spread can be stopped over there. I know that American still does have an issue with this but not as bad and maybe with some education it could be a better place.

Research Sources and Proper CItation

The video assignment we had to do in English was very important and informative in a way that kept the viewer interested. The different videos were all for researching and writing papers with topics of summarizing, using keywords, how many keywords should be used, and the importance of citation.
The video tells the viewer the importance of writing a summary not to in depth or not writing a word for word of others’ work. This is key to do when not wanting to get in trouble for plagiarisms. The point of a summary is to sum up what someone is saying in a few short sentences and not having to write a whole paper. The other good thing about a summary is that it gives a reader the idea of what they are going to read before opening the novel or paper.

As for looking up what you are going to research a good way is to use this second video as a resource on ways to be successful in looking up research sources. The video explains that you must use keywords that are specific to the paper and that would be included in that topic. It helps you know the right amount of words to use along with the library search database.  The keywords that are used are important to get the right sources for your paper.

Knowing the important keywords for the search box is important along with knowing how many words to actually use. If the searcher uses to many, not many reliable sources will be found but if not enough are used the sources that are found will be too broad for the topic. This helps find useful and knowledgeable articles, papers and even videos.

As for when it comes to citing your sources that you have used in your paper this is a key step. The point is to give the article or paper’s author credit for the work they have given you and prove that you are not copying their work and taking the credit. That would be plagiarizing and could get the writer in trouble. At CCU it can get you kick out of the class and even in trouble with the entire University.

Way HIV/AIDS was handled in U.S versus Uganda and Thailand

Looking at HIV/AIDS in our country you must look at how our American population handled the issue. With our presidents and political individuals hiding the knowledge that was known and people not knowing what to do, our country was not educated at all.  With our presidents and higher officials embarrassed to talk about the virus due to its thought of being linked with the homosexual community.  The population was not told whether it could be spread through simple everyday contact or if it was through sexual and blood transitions.

As for the Uganda and Thailand government, they handled the problem a much better way by educating their people and telling them the facts about this deadly infection to prevent more deaths and the spread.  The government would have gatherings to promote safe sex along with even giving out clean syringes to drug users. This didn’t mean they condoned the drug users of the area but they rather see them use clean tools and not spread the HIV/AIDS virus any more then it was already spread. Another way they were able to educate their community was by holding small skits to inform the people what to do and giving out free condoms to promote protective sexual intercourse.

The Uganda and Thailand movement in getting the message across to their countries really showed how the American population knew very little. Our doctors and officials were hiding the ideas of how it was actually transmitted and did not try to educate the American population in thought that maybe it will just go away if it was not talked about.  This was a mistake by the American government because it did not teach the people what to do and left them in fear and also made them look bad in not educating their population.

This is not really surprising because lets face it, American government always seems to wants to cover up the issues instead of taking them head on. It seems as though they think if they do not talk about it or act as if it doesn’t exist it will simply go away.  This issue could have been handled much better and could have even been done like Uganda and Thailand. The U.S should have given informational talks about the topic, shown videos, and even given out protection to try and stop the spreading to happen as easily.

HIV/AIDS

As we touch upon the subject of HIV/AIDS in our world today it is a very important topic to talk about. With more than 1.8 million people estimated to have died in 2009 due to HIV/AIDS. This is something that I believe is very overlooked and many people do not take it as serious as it should be dealt with.

With only being 19 years old my generation was not around when this virus started to affect the world population so it seems as though people don’t get to see the outcome of what it was actually like. As a group we are not as careful as we should be due to the fact that this is a huge problem in our society and causes millions to die each year. In 2009 it was said to be 33.3million people living with HIV/AIDS. I myself don’t even know as much as I probably should about this symptom.
Knowing the prevention in my eyes is key, whether its avoiding getting the symptom or in the prevention of spreading it. Ways to get HIV/AIDS is through blood, semen, breast milk and other body fluids. Ways to block the disease is by not sharing needles and also a big one in our society is by always using protection in sexual intercourse and many teens look beyond doing this.

As for my views of this disease is that It is a terrible infection that has happened to our country along with our world and that it must be treated seriously with the correct medication and our society needs to know more about ways to prevent the spread and be more aware about this problem. Too many people barely know what it really is and do not see it as more then just a sickness. Many people think, “oh it could never happen to me” and the truth is that it can happen to anyone so we need to be conscious and take action.

Gay Marriage; The Rights They Should Have But Not Want

As an adult of today’s culture I must have an open mind of the new tends that are happening in our world today and one of them being gay marriage.  Growing up in South Jersey and being so close to Philadelphia I often took day trips into the city and spent time there, where they have a huge gay population as well. Walking through the gay community wasn’t anything different then walking down any other street minus seeing a few rainbow colored flags around. In my eyes they are not viewed as anything different.

When it comes to the gay marriage rules I think they should be able to get married, they are just trying to have the same rights as others in our world. For the homosexuals being able to get married would give them the feeling of being the same and not looked at differently. I know that marriage means a lot to them and everything but honestly I’m not sure why. When you look at our society of marriage in the United States its not exactly perfect. Almost fifty percent of couples get divorced and it leads to ending relationships more then anything. We put such a great emphasis on getting married that people think if you don’t get married you aren’t living your life correctly.  I believe that the gay marriage debate should be occurring and they need to right for their rights and have the same opportunities as anyone else.

When it comes to my opinion on the debate of gay marriage being legal I think it is an easy answer, it should be allowed. There is no reason why people have the authority to decide who can and cannot get married because they don’t agree with it. Couples getting married never affects anyone and does no harm so why shouldn’t they get the same rights and be able to tie knot as well. Homosexuals should want to get married because it ties the knots but not when the divorce rate is so high and watching how the couples who are married act once married to one another.

Reasons Behind Separation

When it comes to the issue of families falling apart and divorces we must look at the liberal side with domestic violence, economic insecurity and inadequate public support.  This is where most of our divorces come from due to them being a direct correlation between money issues and marriage disputes.

Domestic violence in a family is another big problem in marriages today whether it is the parents neglecting or abusing the children or even the violence between husbands and wives.  Growing up in a household as a child with parents fighting and screaming all the time is never a good environment for the kids. Parents sometimes think that they must stay together simply because they have a child together and this is not true at all. This is why we have divorce and unfortunately it does occur more often then not.  People also tend to get married much quicker then couples used too. This can hurt the relationship by not knowing exactly what people are getting into and not knowing their spouse well enough. This causes early problems in the marriage and quick divorces. When the couple doesn’t divorce it seems more common that domestic violence becomes the hitch.

As for the economic insecurity the families face are the huge problems in relationships. With the job industry being so tough right now people are trying to round up as much money as they can to take care of themselves and their families. Families these days are either one or two paychecks away from losing everything and being homeless in America.  Parents are taking side jobs to earn a few extra dollars and keep the family together. This causes much stress in the household and often strikes fights among the family. Parent’s insecurity about the money, and economic times causes fights and leads to the divorces that are in our country today.
Another problem with marriages today is that the public isn’t always as supportive as the couple may want them to be or as much as they should be. People tend to be against things that they think are wrong simply due to the fact that they wouldn’t do these things themselves. The public needs to grow a tolerance for more things in our society and be more open to the changes of the times.

When we look at the more conservative side I must say theses issues are more like speed bumps or hitches in relationships as apposed to the breaking point and divorce.  Our society seems to swing either one way or the other when it comes to the thought of abortion and I think when this happens it is strictly between the couple and no one else business to know their decision. Abortion could be a huge topic but that’s gets into a whole other bag of worms.
As for the common thought that if you’re not married you cannot have children is just a crazy thought. These days having a kid is not linked with marriage and often when couple are young they have children by mistake. This also does not mean the couple must go ahead and take the next step in getting married as well.  Illegitimacy is just fine with couples and it is not really frowned upon our society today. People sometimes don’t get married due to the cost they don’t have and are together so they have a kid and that is completely fine.

I think another reason for common separation and divorce in homosexuality is due to society rejecting this form of relationship. People think this is something of wrong terms and not accepted. As for me I think it is nothing different and a choice of the person. People liking the same gender is nothing wrong and just a different choice for what the person truly wants. I can’t change what they want, but simply have to accept it.
